Dr. Tom Silva is an Australian-trained doctor who began his career with comprehensive training as an intern and medical resident at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide, followed by rotations in various surgical and medical specialties in major hospitals over the next 10 years. He is the director of Kangaroo Point Medical Centre, a centre of excellence affiliated with the University of Queensland (UQ), where he is heavily involved in research and the training of future doctors (as a lecturer).
Dr. Silva values extensive hospital training as essential for building a strong foundation as a medical practitioner and gaining exposure to a diverse range of medical conditions to become an expert in his field. Some notable positions in his career include serving as a registrar in emergency medicine at Flinders Medical Centre, an Orthopaedic registrar at Gold Coast University Hospital, and a Senior registrar in Oncology at Princess Alexandra Hospital. All these hospitals are centres of excellence, where he worked for over 10 years. Additionally, he gained experience in country hospitals, such as Lismore Base Hospital.
Although he was close to completing his specialist training in oncology, Dr. Silva decided to pursue a career in general practice, driven by his passion for connecting with people and the community. He completed his generalist training in the Northern Rivers region and became a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. For Dr. Silva, medicine is a lifelong journey of learning and improvement, and he has pursued further training in minimally invasive procedures and continues to study and specialize. He is considered one of the few well-rounded generalists, having trained in hospitals across diverse fields before becoming a FRACGP.
He is committed to his care and curiosity, and his motto is: “I will leave no stone unturned in discovering what is wrong with you. If I can’t find out, I will find someone who will.”
Dr. Silva trained with the Australian College of Cutaneous Oncology, led by Prof. Nixon. He has been working in skin cancer for over 10 years. During his oncology training, he gained experience in treating advanced skin cancers as well as in the early detection and treatment of cancers. Currently, he is a consultant for DermaSensor, an advanced artificial intelligence skin cancer adjunct diagnostic device. His expertise in managing skin cancers led to his invitation to serve as a medical advisor. He has also contributed to this field through research, publications, and presentations at national and international conferences.
Dr. Silva specializes in the treatment of venous diseases, with a particular interest in minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins. He trained with the Australasian College of Phlebology and is an active member of the college. Before opening Queensland Veins, Dr. Silva worked at a leading vein hospital on the Gold Coast under Dr. Paul Hannah, one of Australia’s most renowned vein doctors (now retired). He was also trained by Dr. Russel Price, a pioneer of the endovenous laser ablation technique in Australia. The skills he gained through this training led to the establishment of Queensland Veins. Dr. Silva is also passionate about training medical students.
